Uncle Drew

I love watching basketball games and movies of the same.  Some of my favorite basketball movies are Fast Break, The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh. ( Dr J. is my favorite basketball player), Love and Basketball. I was looking forward  to watching  the movie Uncle Drew starring Kyrie Irving. I enjoyed the commercials featuring him.    I was excited to learn that an action figure would be created.  This is not the first basketball player to be featured as an old man.  Lebron James was the first to be created.  However, Lebron James was more a statute figure and Kyrie is an action figure.

I was pleasantly surprised by the action figure.

I have to go get another body, so that Kyrie and Uncle Drew can be featured together.

The negatives are that there is only one body and there feet are pegs.  They each have there own uniforms and sneakers.

Book Reading- An American Marriage

 I belong to a book club.   One of the selections was "An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones.  This is a story about a husband and wife's marriage and how it is changed because of one night.  The wife in the book is a doll maker.  She likes to create cloth artistic dolls. 

The book was good and I enjoyed the addition of the wife being a doll maker and you see how doll making is part of her life.

When I first heard about this doll, I was excited.  I always like getting male dolls.  I could add him to my collection.  It was not until I saw the pictures that I realized that it was an interpretation of the  female barbie doll representing Jean Michel Basquiat's Art.

The Box reads: " During the 1980's, as the art movement known as neo-expression gained traction, a young street artist from Brooklyn, NY emerged.  Barbie celebrates the influential work of Jean-Michel Basquiat.  His frenetic paintings are an infusion of graphic poetry, cultural dichotomies, and compelling social statements.  Basquiat played an essential role in elevating graffiti art from the underground to gaining well-deserved acclaim in the upper echelons of the art world."

The fabric on Barbie shows his various artworks in a wonderful pants suit.  The crown on her head represents his signature in his paintings showing intellect.

At an auction in 2017, one his paintings sold for 110.5 million dollars.

Barbie appears with Basquiat.  Basquiat was created by Medicom in the Real Life Heroes series years ago.

Christie had been Steven's girlfriend since he first appeared in the line of Barbie and Friends.    Christie had a boyfriend that lasted longer than Brad and he appeared in different scenes, but mainly the beach scene.  It seemed like Christie and Steven would remain a couple forever.  But in 2005, Christie was replaced with Nikki in Beach Fun and Fashion Fever and  she was now  seen with Steven.

Christie meets the first Black Fashion Doll by Mattel. They are both reproductions. The original Francie was created in 1967 and Christie followed a year after. Black Francie was not seen again until  the 2000’s as a reproduction but never in a regular series.

Picture Perfect Christie came with a hole puncher in a shape of a butterfly. You could punch out pictures to fit perfectly in one of the plastic pockets on her dress.

In the late 80’s Christie started to get different hair colors.  She appears in this photo with Barbie too. Sitting down is 1996 Hula Hair Barbie. In the back row are 1987 Island Fun Christie, 1993 Camp Fun Barbie and 1991 Totally Hair Barbie.  As the years go forward, it is difficult to know the difference between Christie and Barbie.  These dolls can be separated based on their various  hair colors. Christie would get long hair like Totally Barbie a few years later.

In 1981 Sunsational Malibu Christie and Sunsational Malibu Ken were created and they were listed as friends of Barbie. This was the first time that a black Ken had been created and he look great with his real hai.  (Note: The 1983 Ken had molded hair under the same name, Sunsational Malibu).  Brad had been gone for almost 10 years and Christie decided to go to the beach with Ken. In the series there is a Blonde Barbie and Ken, but the photo on the box shows Ken and Christie together.

Fruit style Christie had an orange scent smell and  came with a fruit belt for you.
Rain or shine  Christie had a working umbrella for her
Amazing Nails Christie came with plastic nails for the you. 

Each Christie has a different look, which was great because growing up she had one look for the longest and the late nineties brought new face and skin tone  changes.

Christie has had several body changes over the years.  She went from slightly bendable at  the knees to full splits.

Her body has allowed more flexibility for sitting and stretching.  Beyond Pink Christie in Black is able to sit  in a chair without falling. It works better if she is wearing  pants. Dance Moves Christie or Barbie can do a full split.  This one came dress in blue and I redressed her.  The box says Barbie but Teresa is identified so I figured there was a mistake and she should be Christie. Her box said, "you can make her move like a real dancer”.  In the back is Jewel Girl Christie.  She was created in 2000 with first time Ever Flex waist.  The doll on the end has traditional bendable legs that were standard on most dolls. I cannot remember her name. 
I wish when I started collecting in  1991 that I tagged each one, but when  you start, you think you will remember every dolls’ name.
