Spawn

In the 1997 movie Spawn, the character was played  by Michael Jai White.  Prior to becoming Spawn, his name was Al Simmons.   Al Simmons becomes Spawn after making a deal with a devil to see his wife one more time because he was killed during a mission.*

The action figures were created as Al Simmons and as Spawn.

The Adventures of Spawn-Spawn X  (2006), Al Simmons (1997), Spawn Series 17: Spawn Classic- Al Simmons (2000) Gunslinger Spawn 12" (2005),

For more info go to Spawn.com. The website shows all the Spawns that have been made over the years.  I   have four of them.  I usually choose the ones that have a face.  The 12" Spawns including Gunslinger came as statutes.  There has never been a 12" Al Simmons.  The figures were created by McFarlane Toys.  I hope they create a 12" Al Simmons action figure with  the Spawn costume.

Falcon

comic book characters- continue

Falcon like Luke Cage was created as a 12" statute.  I did not purchase these statutes because the price of $175 for each was high  and they were not articulated figures.

His real name is Samuel Thomas "Sam" Wilson.   "He originally possessed the ability to telepathically communicate with his pet falcon Redwing, but that ability has grown into the ability to telepathically communicate with any birds within an unknown radius. Through this telepathic link he is also able to receive mental images of what the birds see." *

The Falcon action figure came in 6" and 8" versions.

The 6" came with a falcon and 8" version                      12" version

Actors and their comic book roles

comic book characters- continue

A look at actors who played comic book characters but were never created as  action figures for the characters.

What characters did they play?

The picture shows how they became action figures, but not in their comic book characters.
Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, Will Smith as Agent Jay, Shaquille O'Neal as a Los Angeles Laker, Billy Dee William as Lando Calrissian

Laurence Fishburne was the voice of Silver Surfer in the movie  Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.  The Silver Surfer did come in a 12" size.

Shaquille O'Neal played Steel in the movie of the same name.  "Steel is John Henry Irons.  He was created as a 6" action figure.

Will Smith played Hancock in the movie of the same name. Hancock tells the story of a viligante superhero.

Billy Dee Williams played Two Face ( Villian) in the 1989 Batman movie.  "Two-Face was once Harvey Dent, the clean-cut district attorney of Gotham City and an ally of Batman. until acid was thrown in his face.*

The Silver Surfer wields "the power cosmic", absorbing and manipulating the universe's ambient cosmic energies. He can augment his strength to incalculable levels, and is almost totally indestructible. He can fly at near-limitless speeds on his board. Actors who played comic book characters

comic book characters continue-

Samuel Jackson has played several superheroes and a villian during his movie career.  He was the voice of the character Frozone from the Incredibles (animated). He played Nick Fury in Iron Man, Octopus in the Spirit (a Villian) and Elijah Price in Unbreakable (story based on comic book format).

Octopus

In Iron Man 2, War Machine appears and  his name is Colonel James Rhodes.  In the first Iron Man, Terrence Howard played the part and Don Cheadle played the character in the second movie.  His character is wearing the War Machine costume.

The thing that I did not like about the action figure is the face.  It is a half face plate  that pops off and on and is replaced with the helmet plate.  I wish the entire head was created with the helmet fitting over his head.

Blade

In honor of Comic Con that was here a couple of weeks ago, I am sharing some  of the comic book characters.

Blade- The Vampire Hunter.  The character was brought to life by Wesley  Snipes on the big screen in 1998.  There were two other Blade movies to complete  the trilogy.

The first Blade figure was created  by Toy Biz. It seemed like the figure was created in a small quantity  because it was hard to find.  Every week I would be in every Toys R Us looking for Blade but to no avail.  Then one Saturday afternoon, I went into Toys R Us  and saw that they had only one.  Unfortunately,  a teenager was holding it in his hands and he was surrounded with two other friends holding the other 2 characters (Punisher and Wolverine) released with Blade.  I thought to myself how am I going to get this figure from him.  It was easier than I thought.  I just asked him if he was going to buy it.  He said no and it was a great day.

The second Blade was not based on Wesley Snipes and it is called Real Action Heroes created by Medicom Toys.

The third Blade was based on Wesley Snipes  in Blade 2.  It was created by Hot Toys.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial

This weekend was the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.  Also in October 1964 , he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The monument design was based on his famous speech, I Have a Dream, in which he states  "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope."  See http://washington.org/visiting/experience-dc/mlk-memorial

The action figures that  have a connection to Martin Luther King's life.

(Samuel Jackson, Benjamin Banneker, Pres. Obama, Nelson Mandela)

Samuel Jackson- Playing Martin Luther King in the Broadway Play, "On the Mountaintop".

Benjamin Banneker was an  author, scientist, mathematician, farmer, astronomer, publisher and urban planner.  He assisted in surveying the city that would become the nation's captial. (www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part2/2p84.html).

Other winners of the Nobel Peace Price:
President Barack Obama gave a speech at the dedication on Sunday.  He won  the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.
Nelson Mandela won  in 1993.

The Olmec Toy Company created a Martin Luther King figure in 1992.  I do not own this figure but there is a picture on http://www.blackdollcollecting.blogspot.com/ on the January  18, 2010 posting.

*Sammy Sosa played with the Chicago Cubs.  He is from the Dominican Republic.  He is in a Chicago Cub's uniform, but played with 4 different teams during his career.  He retired from baseball in 2007.

*Anderson "Spider" Silva is a Brazilian mixed martial artist. He is the current UFC Middleweight Champion and the promotion's longest reigning champion.  He was never created as a 12" doll. The doll was  6" figure from  Round 5 - Ultimate Fighting Championship Toys series.  The head was almost the size of a 12" doll head so I put him on a 12" body.
